Introduction and Background

Navan Joint Policing Committee Logos Welcome Address from Chairperson

Councillor Joe Reilly

On behalf of Navan Joint Policing Committee I would like to welcome you to the Navan Joint Policing Committee Website.

The purpose of these pages is to give members of the public access to the workings of the Committee in an open and transparent fashion and to outline some of the activities that we undertake. The aim is to improve safety within our communities through a process of co-operation and mutual respect.

We feel that the Joint Policing Committee has the potential to make a major contribution to the improved policing of the areas we represent to the benefit of all residents of Navan.

As Chairperson, I believe that it is vitally important to engage with you, the citizens of Navan on issues such as community safety, anti-social behaviour, public order and road safety.

Public meetings allow members of the public to have their say, or maybe just to listen and also provide an opportunity to put faces on senior Gardai and Council Officials who are involved in the decision making process that affects local issues.

I hope that you will enjoy using this website which is intended to give an in-depth insight into the workings of the Committee and the many initiatives which are at varying stages of development.

Cllr Joe Reilly,
Chairperson

Purpose of Navan Joint Policing Committee

The purpose of the Joint Policing Committee is to serve as a forum for consultation, discussion and recommendation on matters affecting the policing of the Navan Town Area by:

  • Keeping under review the levels and patterns of crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in that area.
  • Advising the local authority and the Gardaí on how best they might perform their functions having regard to the need to do everything feasible to improve the safety and quality of life and to prevent crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour within the area.
  • Arranging and hosting public meetings concerning matters affecting the policing of the local authorities administrative area.
  • Establishing in consultation with the local Garda Superintendent local policing fora.

Role of the Community

The Community, as in local residents, have an important part to play in the success of the Navan Joint Policing Committee. The Gardaí in particular, need the assistance of local residents in keeping them up to date on any information that might be of assistance in solving a crime or regarding a threat to public safety. The Community Gardaí can be contacted at Navan Garda Station on (046) 9079930.

How can you Voice Your Concerns/Issues/Opinions?

The best way to do have your say on issues such as anti-social behaviour, graffiti,  traffic matters etcis to come along to a Public Meeting of the Joint Policing Committee. These meetings will be advertised on www.meath.ie and local newspapers  from time to time for specific local areas around Navan. You are free to attend any public meeting which is advertised for the general area in which you live.

Public Meetings

Public Meetings are to be held 3 times a year at various locations through-out Navan. Typically they will be held in local Community Halls, GAA Clubs, hotels and pubs in an effort to hear what local residents have to say about the policing of local areas. These meetings are attended by officials of Navan Town Council, Elected Representatives and members of An Garda Síochána including the Navan Superintendent as well as Community Policing Sergeants and Community Gardaí.

Public meetings of the Navan JPC provide an opportunity for local residents to make observations and address questions to the members of the Navan JPC on matters  relating to crime and anti-social behaviour with a view to improving public safety within  their local community.  This provides a unique opportunity for members of the community to play a role in  partnership with the Gardaí and the Council in looking at crime and safety within Navan.

Conducting Public Meetings

Generally, the meeting is opened and chaired by the Chairperson of the JPC, Cllr Joe Reilly. The Chairperson will then invite  representatives of Navan Town Council  and the Gardaí to address the meeting briefly before opening the meeting to the floor. Any member of the public present can address a statement or question to either the Council or the Gardaí in relation to any matter that is relevant to the meeting.

If there is an issue that concerns you regarding crime and safety within your community, you should in the first instance contact your local Community Gardaí at the following number:(046) 9079930. Phone numbers for other Garda Stations can be found at County Meath Garda Station Contact Information. If you are at a public meeting but don’t want to raise your issue in a public forum, an opportunity is provided at the end of each meeting for members of the public to approach Council officials and local Community Gardaí on a one-to one basis. All matters discussed are treated in the strictest confidence.
