Lost or Stolen Driving Licences

Losing or having your driving licence stolen can be very inconvenient, particularly if you are required to drive as part of your job.

If your driving licence has been lost, stolen, damaged or defaced but is still current

If your most recent provisional Irish driving licence or full Irish driving licence has been lost or stolen and is still current, you must first visit your local Garda Station and complete a form to this effect. The form you complete, is effectively a statement confirming that your driving licence has been lost or stolen and is still current. Your application form is then stamped by the officer on duty at the Garda Station.

You should note that if your driving licence has been lost, stolen, damaged or defaced but is still current, you should contact your local Garda Station for a duplicate driving licence application form (D.800). The form D800 is also available from local libraries.

If your lost or stolen driving licence is out of date

If your lost or stolen driving licence is out of date, you must visit your Garda station to sign a application form stating this. Your local Motor Tax Office will not issue another driving licence unless your application form has been signed and stamped by the Gardai.

Special Provisions

If there are any special provisions on your lost or stolen driving licence, these same provisions will be included on your new driving licence. For example, if your original licence stated that you were required to wear spectacles, or you drive an adapted vehicle or you have an endorsement on your licence, your new driving licence will also state this information.

Driving licences are legal documents and you are required to carry your driving licence with you at all times when driving in Ireland.

Fees

You are required to pay the standard fee if your driving licence has been lost or stolen and is out of date.

Provisional driving licence - 1-2 years -15 euro
Full driving licence - 1 year - 5 euro (based on medical grounds only)
Full driving licence - 3 years - 15 euro
Full driving licence -10 years - 25 euro

You are required to pay a fee of 10 euro if your driving licence has been lost or stolen and is still current.
Please note, if your driving licence is still current - then what you are actually applying for, is a duplicate of your current driving licence.
