Drinking Water Quality

Public Water Supplies

A public water supply is water that is supplied to the public directly from the public water mains.

Meath County Council has a duty under the European Communities (Drinking Water) (No.2) Regulations 2007 to ensure that the quality of public drinking water within the county meets certain standards. Drinking water quality testing and monitoring takes place at every stage of the supply system. Samples are taken in the catchments, during and after the treatment process, in distribution and at customers' taps. Monitoring of water supplies at consumer taps in the county is carried out by the Health Service Executive on behalf of Meath County Council. We then provide the reports from our tests to the Environmental Protection Agency who assess and publish their own reports on the drinking water quality in Ireland.

Private Water Supply

If your water supply is from a private source e.g. well or borehole and supplies an individual's house, this is known as a private supply. Meath County Council is not responsible for these supplies. However, Meath County Council can provide information on how to protect your water supply, testing of your water supply and general drinking water quality. You can find out more about this by calling or emailing Environment & Water Services using the contact details in the Useful Contacts & Further Information section below. You can also find out further information on grants for private water supply by visiting the Well Grants Section.

Business Customers

Meath County Council can provide a certificate of potability for your public mains drinking water and can ensure the quality of the mains drinking water supply to this premises.  Business customers should be aware, however, that the internal plumbing arrangements within the site and their possible effect on drinking water quality is wholly the responsibility of the owner.

Further information on this or requests regarding certificates of potability should be made through the Environment Water Services Department by emailing environment@meathcoco.ie.
